  Question

How do I connect and set up a px4-300d on my network?
  Answer

This article provides detailed installation instructions and general setup guidelines for your px4-300d Network Storage device. If you have purchased more than one network storage device, complete all steps on one before setting up additional devices.

NOTE: If you purchased a diskless px4-300d, you must install at least one hard drive before proceeding with the following steps. See Answer ID 26012 for a list of approved and supported hard drive brands and models. See Answer ID 31697 for instructions on how to install hard drives in your px4-300d.

Connecting the px4-300d to your Network

  1. Use the included network cable to connect the px4-300d to your network router.

NOTE: The px4-300d has two 10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet ports. You can use either one to connect to your network. The px4-300d will automatically detect your network speed.

  2. Use the included power adapter and cord to plug the px4-300d into your surge-protected power source.

  3. If the px4-300d doesn't power up automatically, press and release the power button on the front panel.

  4. From a computer on your network, open a web browser and go to http://setup.lenovoemc.com to set up your px4-300d on your network. You can also use the management console directly to access and configure your px4-300d. See the following sections for more information.

NOTE: For best results, use a computer that is connected to the same router, hub, or switch as the device.

  5. OPTIONAL: For easy access to your px4-300d, install LenovoEMC Storage Manager (LSM) on each computer on your network.

NOTE: You can install LSM from the setup portal or download the latest version from the web support site. There are separate versions of LSM available for Windows, Mac, and Linux computers.

  6. When the LenovoEMC Storage Manager installation completes, the software will automatically launch and scan your network for supported devices.

NOTE: If you receive a message from Windows Firewall alerting you of network activity, click the Unblock button.

  7. Once LenovoEMC Storage Manager has found the px4-300d, highlight the device icon and select Manage to open the management console. You can also use LenovoEMC Storage Manager to access the device Home Page or connect to available shares.

Setting up your px4-300d from the Web Setup Portal

The web setup portal (http://setup.lenovoemc.com) provides easy setup and configuration for your px4-300d. You can also install optional software components on your client computer, set up a LenovoEMC Personal Cloud, and automatically launch the device interface to start using your ix2 immediately.

Setting up your px4-300d from the Device Console

If you want to set up the device without using the setup portal, you can access the management console (web-based device interface) directly by entering the device IP address or model name in your computer’s web browser. For the model name, use px4-300d. To use the model name on a Mac, add .local after the name in the browser (px4-300d.local).

If you have installed LenovoEMC Storage Manager on your client computer, you can also use it to access the management console. Select the device icon in the LenovoEMC Storage Manager window, then click the Settings icon, or right-click on the device icon and select Manage.

The first time you access the management console, you will see the Setup page where you can configure some of the more commonly used features. You can also use the management console to return to the Setup page at a later time or access other configuration options.

  1. To access the Setup page from the management console, select System on the left, then click Setup in the main window.

  2. The Setup page shows default settings for basic configuration options and some commonly used features. To change the settings, select an option and adjust the configuration as desired. Click Apply to save your changes. If you need more information about the settings options, click the Overview link on any page to access context-sensitive help.

  3. It is recommended that you enable security to protect the privacy of data stored on your px4-300d. Select Security Settings on the Setup page to turn on security and create an admin user and password. See Answer ID 26392 for more information on enabling security.

  4. Select the Personal Cloud option if you want to create a LenovoEMC Personal Cloud on your px4-300d. See Answer ID 32206 for detailed setup instructions.

  5. To set configuration options for other features, select All Features, then click the icon for the feature you want to use. You can also select any category on the left side of the management console to view and configure available features. Here's where to look for some frequently used features:

    • Select System > System Status to view information on the current firmware version, the IP address assigned to your px4-300d, and detailed status information for the device.

    • Select Media > Media Server to set up your px4-300d as a media center on your network.

    • Select Storage > Drive Management to access information on total drive storage space, volume capacity, used space, and available space. This page also allows you to change the default RAID setting if desired. See Answer ID 2280 for more information on RAID options.

NOTE: Changing the RAID setting will delete all data on your px4-300d. Allow time for the device to rebuild the RAID.

    • To manage users and groups on your px4-300d, select Common > Users. See Answer ID 26393 for detailed instructions on how to add and manage users and groups.

  6. For more information on setting up and using the features available on your px4-300d, refer to the user's guide or click the question mark icon at the top of the management console to access the help system.
