Hereafter the CD/DVD/BD for the BIOS update is called as "BIOS Update CD". The BIOS Update CD can boot the computer disregarding the operating systems and update two sets of the BIOSes (including system programs and Embedded Controller programs) stored in the following ThinkPad computers to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. - BIOS ID 6Dxxxxxx-based computer (Upper two alphanumeric characters of BIOS ID are 6D) - BIOS ID 7Xxxxxxx-based computer (Upper two alphanumeric characters of BIOS ID are 7X) For that purpose, it is necessary to have the CD/DVD/BD writing software (with CD/DVD/BD creation function from the ISO image file) prepared separately. Also, any one of the following types of CD-RW, CD-RW & DVD Combo, DVD, DVD Multi, BD or other optical drives should be prepared. [Problem fixes] Nothing. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DETERMINING WHICH VERSION IS INSTALLED There are two ways to check the BIOS version and BIOS ID. [Checking on Windows] Windows 7/Vista: 1. Click Start, click All Programs or Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools and then click System Information. - or - Click Start, type msinfo32 in the Start Search box and then click msinfo32 in the Programs list. 2. On the System Information window, make sure System Summary is selected in the left side of the window. 3. Locate the BIOS version/date line in the right side of the window. "LENOVO BIOS ID (BIOS version), date" will be shown. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue. Windows XP: 1. Click Start, click All programs, click Accessories, click System Tools and then click System Information. - or - Click Start, click Run, type msinfo32 in the Open box and then click OK. 2. On the System Information window, make sure System Summary is selected in the left side of the window. 3. Locate the BIOS version/date line in the right side of the window. "LENOVO BIOS ID (BIOS version), date" will be shown. [Checking on BIOS Setup] 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Locate the BIOS Version line and Embedded Controller Version line. "BIOS version (BIOS ID)" will be shown on the BIOS Version line. 5. Turn off the computer. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTES - You should install the CD/DVD/BD writing software which supports CD/DVD/BD creation function from the ISO image file to create the BIOS Update CD. - To boot the computer from the BIOS Update CD, you should have any one of the following types of optical drives. - USB - Ultrabay Slim installed in the ThinkPad UltraBase Any types of PC Card, CardBus PC Card or ExpressCard optical drive are not supported. - The contents of the BIOS Update CD can not be shown by Windows Explorer. - To use Intel Anti-Theft Technology PC Protection , "Intel AMT 4.1 - Management Engine Firmware" version 4.1.3 or higher must be installed into your computer. - If system protection function by Intel Anti-Theft Technology PC Protection, ConstantSecure Remote Disable or ThinkVantage Hardware Password Manager feature is still activated and when you try to get back to the older BIOS versions without these features, the following message will be displayed. This is to prevent system protection function from being deactivated. BIOS Update CD: "Error The system program file is not correct for this system" BIOS Update Utility: "The process does not recognize this system.The utility process has not completed." To get back to such the older BIOS versions, you should deactivate these features before applying the BIOS. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CREATING THE BIOS UPDATE CD This section assumes to use Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer. Downloading file 1. Click once on the underlined file name. Once this is done, some pop-up windows will appear. 2. Follow the instructions on the screen. 3. In the window to choose Run or Save, click Save. 4. Choose the folder you would like to download the file to and click Save. A different window will appear and the download will begin and complete. Once the download has completed, there may or may not be a message stating that the download completed successfully. Creating BIOS Update CD 5. Prepare a computer with an optical drive installed and a blank CD/DVD/BD disc, and make sure the CD/DVD/BD writing software is installed into the computer. 6. Locate the folder where the file was downloaded. 7. Locate the file ending in ".ISO" that was downloaded, then double-click it. A writing software will open. 8. Follow the instructions on the screen to finish writing and complete creating BIOS Update CD. Finally delete the file saved in the step 4. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATING THE BIOS Notes: - If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the BIOS. To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Version Information section. - You need an AC adapter, a charged battery pack and any one of the following types of optical drives. - USB - Ultrabay Slim installed in the ThinkPad UltraBase - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in the remote deployment environments. Attention: Do not turn off, suspend the computer or remove the BIOS UPDATE CD until the update has been completed. IF YOU DO THAT WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. 1. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the target computer. 2. Make sure it has an optical drive installed. 3. Turn off the computer. 4. Turn on the computer. 5. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F12 key. Boot Menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears,type the correct password. 6. Insert the BIOS Update CD into the optical drive. 7. Select USB CD or ATAPI CD0 to set up the boot drive. USB CD: when using a USB optical drive ATAPI CD0: when using an Ultrabay Slim optical drive installed in the ThinkPad UltraBase Then, the computer will be rebooted from the BIOS Update CD. 8. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information. 9. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 10. Select Update system program and follow the instructions on the screen. 11. After the information panel appears, remove the BIOS Update CD from the optical drive then press the Enter key to restart the computer. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INITIALIZING BIOS BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS settings: 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Press the F9 key to load default configuration. 5. Select Yes. 6. Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit. 7. Select Yes. 8. Restart the computer. Note: After initialization you may need to reapply some settings that you had changed previously. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW FEATURE INSTRUCTION 1. How to enter the Intel Management Engine BIOS Extension screen: To save system boot time, the prompt for Intel Management Engine BIOS Extension screen was removed from the boot screen. Instead of the prompt, the following new entries were added in the Boot Menu shown by pressing the F12 key at boot. To enter the Intel Management Engine BIOS Extension screen, do the following. 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F12 key. A Boot Menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Select "Enter ME Configuration Screens" or "Initiate a Remote Connection".
