Firmware Update for Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 SATA Hard Disk Drive Seagate Models ST3500820AS(500 GB) and ST31000340AS(1 TB) Version LV13 Seagate has recently informed Lenovo of two issues that affect the firmware on certain Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 SATA hard disk drives. The two drive families are used by Lenovo on Desktop and Workstation branded systems. Seagate has described the two firmware issues as follows: - A firmware issue that may result in data becoming inaccessible after a power-off/on operation. This issue was disclosed by Seagate in the following Knowledge Base article at Seagate’s, support site. http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/news.jsp?DocId=207931 - A firmware issue where operating with write cache enabled and issuing Write, Read Verify, and Read commands in the same LBA range can cause a Read command to return old data. Lenovo believes that the probability of a customer seeing either of these two firmware issues is extremely low. That being said, Lenovo and Seagate have decided to release a firmware update that prevents both of these issues. Lenovo recommends that all customers with affected Seagate drives apply this firmware update as soon as possible. Applying the firmware update will not affect any data currently stored on your hard disk drive. NOTE: Lenovo always recommends backing up your data prior to applying a hard disk drive firmware update. FIRMWARE UPGRADE INSTRUCTIONS: 1) Create the DOS bootable CD-ROM or floppy. 2) Use a standard desktop PC with an integrated SATA controller, or a common SATA add-in controller like a Promise SATA150-TX2. 3) Disconnect all PATA or SATA devices from the system, except the device needing the firmware update. 4) Boot the system using the update floppy or CD. 5) At the menu, choose option 'S' to Scan for your hard disk drive. 6) Make note of the Drive Model and Firmware (FW) revision. 7) If the Drive Model is either ST3500820AS or ST31000340AS, and the Firmware revision is LV12 or below, then choose the option from the main menu to upgrade the firmware on your model of Seagate hard drive. 8) If you already have the new firmware level (LV13 or greater), or do not have either model number drive in your system, then choose "Done" from the main menu and reboot your system. ***WARNING************************************************************ ** DO NOT POWER DOWN the system or the drive during this upgrade process. If power is lost during a firmware upgrade, the drive will be destroyed. ** WAIT until all drive LED activity has ceased before powering off the drive. Your system should come back to the message "Cycle power to continue..." after the software finishes uploading the firmware. ** DO NOT USE CTRL-ALT-DELETE to reboot your system after upgrading the firmware. Once the firmware upgrade is complete, turn off the power to your system using the power button, wait 10 seconds, and then turn the power back on using the power button.
