Things to confirm before installing Windows 8

This site contains a set of Hints & Tips that document special requirements or considerations for installing and using the Microsoft(R) Windows(R) 8 operating system on your ThinkPad(R), ThinkPad Edge, or Lenovo(R) B, E, K, M, and V series notebook computer. Before you start the installation, Lenovo strongly recommends you to make sure your system is using the latest BIOS and drivers. Title:

1. The on-screen keyboard can be activated only once on the product key input screen

Affected Systems:

- This is common for all ThinkPad systems and Lenovo B, E, K, M, and V series.

Symptom:

After a clean installation of the Microsoft Windows operating system, the on-screen keyboard will be displayed when you click the on-screen keyboard button on the product key input screen for the first time. However, if you close the on-screen keyboard and then click the on-screen keyboard button later, the on-screen keyboard will not be displayed again.

Cause:

This is a limitation caused by the design of the Windows 8 operating system.

Solution:

No solution.

 

Title:

2. The "View on the desktop" function does not support blank pages in Internet Explorer launched from the Start screen

Affected Systems:

- This is common for all ThinkPad, ThinkPad Edge, Lenovo B, E, K, M and V series systems.

Symptom:

From the Start screen, you open a blank page in the Internet Explorer(R) Web browser, click the Page Tools icon (the wrench icon) in the bottom-right corner, and then click View on the desktop, the system has no response.

Cause:

This is a limitation caused by the design of the Windows 8 operating system.

Solution:

No solution.

 

Title:

3. The Windows password for the local user account will be lost when switching from a Microsoft account to a local user account

Affected Systems:

- This is common for all ThinkPad, ThinkPad Edge, Lenovo B, E, K, M and V series systems.

Symptom:

When switching from a Microsoft account (also known as Windows Live(R) account) to a local user account, the Windows password for accessing the local user account will be lost. No Windows password will be required to access the local user account, and a new password also can be created.

Cause:

This is a limitation caused by the design of the Windows 8 operating system.

Solution:

No solution.

4. USB3.0 devices perform as USB 2.0 devices on Windows 8 models

Affected Systems:

Symptom:

You attach a USB 3.0 device to a USB 3.0 connector on a computer installed with the Windows 8 operating system. However, the device performs as a USB 2.0 device.

Cause:

On Windows 8 models, the USB 3.0 function is not supported by your current BIOS.

Solution:

Go to the Lenovo Support Web site at http://www.lenovo.com/support to download and install the latest BIOS for your system.

 

Title:

5. The multi-card reader still functions after it is disabled in Device Manager on Windows 8 models

Affected Systems:

- ThinkPad T410, T410i, T410s, T410si, T510, T510i
- ThinkPad W510

Symptom:

After you disable the multi-card reader in Device Manager on a computer installed with the Windows 8 operating system, the multi-card reader still can read, write, or format the inserted media card.

Cause:

The Ricoh Multi Card Reader Driver for Windows 7 is not completely compatible with Windows 8.

Solution:

Uninstall the Ricoh Multi Card Reader Driver. The Windows 8 operating system comes with a multi-card reader driver as a standard feature.

 

Title:

6. Wireless LAN and WiMax controls are dimmed on Windows 8

Affected Systems:

- ThinkPad Edge 11, 13, 14, 15, E120, E125, E130, E135, E220s, E30, E31, E320, E325, E330, E335, E40, E420, E420s, E425, E430, E435, E50, E520, E525, E530, E535, S430

Symptom:

On computers installed with the Microsoft Windows 8 operating system, when you move the cursor to the bottom right corner of the screen to bring up the charms, and then click Settings > Change PC settings > Wireless, you find out that the wireless LAN and WiMax controls are dimmed.

Cause:

The Wireless LAN and WiMAX Radios option is disabled in the ThinkPad Setup program.

Solution:

To solve the problem, do the following:
1. Restart the computer. When the ThinkPad logo is displayed, press F1. The ThinkPad Setup program main menu opens.
2. Select Config > Network. Network configuration options are displayed.
3. Enable the Wireless LAN and WiMAX Radios option.

 

Title:

7. The Ultrabay optical drive is not displayed as a device in the Safely Remove Hardware interface

Affected Systems:

- This is common for all ThinkPad systems except ThinkPad X1 and ThinkPad X1 Hybrid.

Symptom:

In either of the following conditions, when you click or double-click the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows notification area, the Ultrabay(TM) optical drive is not displayed as a device in the Safely Remove Hardware interface:
- The Ultrabay optical drive is installed on your computer with or without an optical disc in it, and then you start the Windows 8 operating system.
- The Windows 8 operating system is running, and then you install the Ultrabay optical drive on your computer without having an optical disc in the drive.

Cause:

This is a limitation caused by the design of the Windows 8 operating system.

Solution:

Turn off the computer and then remove the Ultrabay optical drive.

 

Title:

8. The Tablet Shortcut Menu does not work on Windows 8 models

Affected Systems:

- ThinkPad X220 Tablet, X220i Tablet, X230 Tablet, X230i Tablet

Symptom:

The system has no response when you adjust the volume or brightness through the Tablet Shortcut Menu on a computer installed with the Windows 8 operating system.

Cause:

The Tablet Shortcut Menu is not supported on the Windows 8 operating system.

Solution:

Use function key combinations to adjust the volume or brightness.
- Press Fn+F8 or Fn+F9 to adjust the brightness.
- Press Fn+F10 or Fn+F11 to adjust the volume.

 

Title:

9. ThinkPad X1 Hybrid Instant Media Mode does not support Windows 8

Affected Systems:

- ThinkPad X1 Hybrid

Symptom:

After the ThinkPad X1 Hybrid is upgraded to Windows 8 from Windows 7, the system cannot switch to the Instant Media Mode (IMM).

Cause:

The ThinkPad X1 Hybrid IMM does not support the Windows 8 operating system.

Solution:

No solution.

 

Title:

10. Wireless controls are still on when airplane mode is enabled on Windows 8

Affected Systems:

- ThinkPad T430, T430i, T430s, T430si, T530, T530i
- ThinkPad W530
- ThinkPad X230, X230i
- ThinkPad X230 Tablet, X230i Tablet

Symptom:

On computers installed with the Microsoft Windows 8 operating system, when airplane mode is enabled, wireless controls, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth controls, remain on. They are supposed to be turned off automatically when airplane mode is enabled.

Cause:

The Lenovo HID HW Radio Driver and the latest BIOS for the Windows 8 operating system are not installed.

Solution:

Go to the Lenovo Support Web Site at http://www.lenovo.com/support to download and install the Lenovo HID HW Radio Driver and the latest BIOS for your system.

 

Title:

11. The Bluetooth feature cannot be turned on on computers upgraded to Windows 8 from Windows 7

Affected Systems:

- This is common for all ThinkPad systems.

Symptom:

If the Bluetooth feature is turned off before you upgrade to Windows 8 from Windows 7, after you upgrade to Windows 8, the Bluetooth feature cannot be turned on.

Cause:

The design of wireless controls on Windows 8 is different from the design on Windows 7.

Solution:

Go to the Lenovo Support Web Site at http://www.lenovo.com/support to download and install the latest BIOS for your system.

Title:

12. The multitouch function does not work on Windows 8 models upgraded from Windows 7

Affected Systems:

- ThinkPad T400s, T410s, T410si

Symptom:

After you upgrade a computer to the Windows 8 operating system from Windows 7, the multitouch function does not work.

Cause:

The N-trig DuoSense(R) multitouch driver for Windows 7 is not compatible with Windows 8.

Solution:

Uninstall the N-trig DuoSense multitouch driver before upgrading to Windows 8. After you upgrade the computer to Windows 8, download and install the N-trig DuoSense multitouch beta driver at:

Note: The N-trig DuoSense multitouch beta driver is not certified by Lenovo. Lenovo does not support Windows 8 multitouch function on the systems specified.

13. The multitouch function does not work on Windows 8 models upgraded from Windows 7

Affected Systems:

- ThinkPad X220 Tablet, X220i Tablet, X230 Tablet, X230i Tablet

Symptom:

After you upgrade a computer to the Windows 8 operating system from Windows 7, the multitouch function does not work.

Cause:

The ThinkPad Enhanced Multitouch Driver for Windows 7 is not compatible with Windows 8.

Solution:

Uninstall the ThinkPad Enhanced Multitouch Driver before upgrading to Windows 8. The Windows 8 operating system comes with a multitouch driver as a standard feature.

 

Title:

14. Creating a system image to a disc might fail by using the Windows 7 File Recovery program on Windows 8

Affected Systems:

- This is common for all ThinkPad systems.

Symptom:

When you create a system image to a disc using the Windows 7 File Recovery program on Windows 8, the operation might fail.

Cause:

This is a limitation caused by the design of the Windows 8 operating system.

Solution:

Do the following to create a system image to a disc:
1. Insert a blank disc into the optical drive.
2. When you are prompted to choose how to use the disc, choose to use the disc like a USB flash drive and click Next. The disc will be formatted.
3. After the format process finishes, use the Windows 7 File Recovery program on the Windows 8 operating system to create a system image to the disc.

 

Title:

15. Microsoft Office Starter 2010 does not work on computers upgraded to Windows 8 from Windows 7

Affected Systems:

- This is common for all ThinkPad systems.

Symptom:

The Microsoft Office Starter 2010 program cannot be launched on computers upgraded to Windows 8 from Windows 7.

Cause:

The Microsoft Office Starter 2010 program is not compatible with Windows 8.
