Microsoft Windows 8 Hints & Tips on ThinkCentre, and ThinkStation Desktop Computers

Things to confirm before installing Windows 8

This site contains a set of Hints & Tips that document special requirements or considerations for installing and using the Microsoft(R) Windows(R) 8 operating system on your ThinkCentre(R), or ThinkStation(R) desktop computer. Before you start the installation, Lenovo strongly recommends you to make sure your system is using the latest BIOS and drivers. Title:

1. The "View on the desktop" function does not support blank pages in Internet Explorer launched from the Start screen

Affected Systems:

- This is common for all ThinkCentre, and ThinkStation systems.

Symptom:

From the Start screen, you open a blank page in the Internet Explorer(R) Web browser, click the Page Tools icon (the wrench icon) in the bottom-right corner, and then click View on the desktop, the system has no response.

Cause:

This is a limitation caused by the design of the Windows 8 operating system.

Solution:

No solution.

 

Title:

2. The Windows password for the local user account will be lost when switching from a Microsoft account to a local user account

Affected Systems:

- This is common for all ThinkCentre, and ThinkStation systems.

Symptom:

When switching from a Microsoft account (also known as Windows Live(R) account) to a local user account, the Windows password for accessing the local user account will be lost. No Windows password will be required to access the local user account, and a new password also can be created.

Cause:

This is a limitation caused by the design of the Windows 8 operating system.

Solution:

No solution.

 

Title:

3. The screen touch function is lost after the computer resumes from sleep

Affected Systems:

- ThinkCentre Edge 91z machine types 1732, 1734, and 1736

Symptom:

Symptom 1: For a computer with a clean installation of the Windows 8 operating system, after you put the computer into sleep and then wake it up in a few minutes, the screen touch function is lost.

Symptom 2: For a computer upgraded to the Windows 8 operating system from the Windows 7 operating system, after you put the computer into sleep and then wake it up in 10 hours or later, the screen touch function is lost.

Cause:

This is because that the touch firmware version might not be compatible with the Windows 8 operating system.

Solution:

Go to http://www.lenovo.com/support to search for, download, and upgrade to the touch firmware version 0.2.0.0 or later.

Title:

4. Microsoft Office Starter 2010 does not work on computers upgraded to Windows 8 from Windows 7

Affected Systems:

- All ThinkCentre, and ThinkStation systems

Symptom:

The Microsoft Office Starter 2010 program cannot be launched on computers upgraded to Windows 8 from Windows 7.

Cause:

The Microsoft Office Starter 2010 program is not compatible with Windows 8.

Solution:

Follow the instructions on the Microsoft Web site at:

Title:

5. System cannot be upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8

Affected Systems:

- ThinkStation C30, D30, S30

Symptom:

When you upgrade a computer from Windows 7 to Windows 8, the upgrade fails with a blue screen and the computer restarts automatically and returns to Windows 7.

Cause:

The Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology driver for Windows 7 is not compatible with Windows 8.

Solution:

Upgrade the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver on the Windows 7 system to the version 3.5.0.1096 or later. The Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver is available for download on the Lenovo Web site at:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS031524.

 

Title:

6. Creating a system image to a disc might fail by using the Windows 7 File Recovery program on Windows 8

Affected Systems:

- All ThinkCentre, and ThinkStation systems

Symptom:

When you create a system image to a disc using the Windows 7 File Recovery program on Windows 8, the operation might fail.

Cause:

This is a limitation caused by the design of the Windows 8 operating system.

Solution:

Do the following to create a system image to a disc:
1. Insert a blank disc into the optical drive.
2. When you are prompted to choose how to use the disc, choose to use the disc like a USB flash drive and click Next. The disc will be formatted.
3. After the format process finishes, use the Windows 7 File Recovery program on the Windows 8 operating system to create a system image to the disc.
