This document describes the steps for installing the Microsoft® Windows® 7 operating system and updating the system BIOS and drivers on supported ThinkCentre®, ThinkStation™, and Value line desktop computers. This document also contains hints, tips, and limitations found during testing of Windows 7 on the ThinkCentre, ThinkStation, and Value line desktop computers specified in this document. In some cases, this document will suggest that you take steps prior to installing or upgrading to Windows 7. Therefore, it is recommended that you read the entire document before installing Windows 7, and follow the instructions provided.

Lenovo has tested and confirmed that the operating system of the following ThinkCentre, ThinkStation, and Value line desktop computers can be upgraded from Windows Vista® Service Pack 1 (SP1) to Windows 7. However, depending on hardware and software configuration, your computer may not be upgradeable, even if it is listed below. Refer to the following sections for details.

Before upgrading your computer operating system to Windows 7, it is recommended to run Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor on your computer first. The Upgrade Advisor scans your computer to check if your computer is ready for Windows 7. By viewing the results of the scan, you can review issues that might prevent you from upgrading to Windows 7.

If there are any peripheral devices installed on your computer, you need to check if they are compatible with Windows 7. Go to the Microsoft Windows 7 home page and the Web sites of the manufacturers of the peripheral devices for compatibility information. You may need to download device drivers for the peripheral devices.
You also need to check if all of your necessary application software is compatible with Windows 7. Go to the Web sites of the manufacturers of the application software for compatibility information. You may also want to check the Microsoft Windows 7 home page for any known compatibility issues of the application software.
