Check Driver Version. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTES - A Blue Screen error will come up on the Windows preload when these models boot with "Compatible" mode instead of "AHCI" that is modified from the BIOS Setup/ Config/Serial SATA menu. This is caused by an absence of a compatible driver on the Windows preload. Stay "AHCI" mode when you boot Windows preload. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS Note: - If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the software. To determine if you should update the software, refer to the Version Information section. Manual Install This section assumes to use Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer. Downloading file 1. Select once on the underlined file name. Once this is done, some pop-up windows will appear. 2. Follow the instructions on the screen. 3. In the window to choose Run or Save, select Save. 4. Choose the folder you would like to download the file to, and select Save. A different window will appear and the download will begin and complete. Once the download has completed, there may or may not be a message stating that the download completed successfully. Extracting file 5. Make sure to be logged on with an administrator account. 6. Locate the folder where the file was downloaded. 7. Locate the file that was downloaded and double-click/double-tap it. 8. Follow the instructions on the screen. 9. In the Select Destination Location window, select Next. If you would like to select a different folder, select Browse. 10. In the Ready to Install window, select Install. All the necessary files will be extracted to the folder selected in the step 9. 11. Uncheck the checkbox next to "Install ..... now", and then select Finish to complete extraction. Delete the file saved in the step 4. Installing files 12. Select Start. 13. [Windows 7/Vista] Right-click Computer, and then select Properties. At the left pane, select Device Manager. [Windows XP] Right-click My Computer, select Properties, select the Hardware tab, and then select Device Manager. 14. Double-click/double-tap the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers or Storage controllers category. 15. Double-click/double-tap either of the following devices; Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller Intel(R) 7 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller Intel(R) 5 Series 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller Intel(R) Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller 16. Select the Driver tab, then select Update Driver Software... 17. Select Browse my computer for driver software. 18. Select Browse..., then point to driver location specified in step 9. 19. Make sure the checkbox next to "Include subfolders" is checked and select Next. 20. Select Close when the installation has completed. 21. Select Yes to restart the computer. [Windows XP] CLEAN INSTALL Before installing the operating system, install Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver, as follows: Notes: - Be sure to install Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver before installing the operating system. Otherwise your computer will not respond; it will only display a blue screen. - In RAID mode, the following procedures is the ONLY procedure to install Windows XP successfully. 1. Attach a floppy disk drive to your computer. 2. Download Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver from the Web site and extract the driver to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IRST and copy the driver to a floppy disk. 3. Make sure that SATA AHCI or RAID is enabled; 3-1. Power off the computer. 3-2. Power on the computer. 3-3. Press the F1 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility when the "ThinkPad" logo is seen on the screen. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 3-4. Select Config. 3-5. Select Serial ATA (SATA). 3-6. Make sure RAID* or AHCI is selected. (* ThinkPad W510 only) 3-7. Press the F3 key, and then press the F3 key to go back to main menu. 4. Make sure that Operating System can be installed from Windows XP CD; 4-1. Select Startup. 4-2. Select Boot. 4-3. In Boot Priority Order, set "ATAPI CD0:" to the top of the list, "1". 4-4. Press the F10 key to save the new setup, and then select Yes. The computer will restart. 5. Insert the Windows XP CD into the optical drive, and restart the computer. 6. To install a third-party SCSI or RAID driver first, press F6. 7. When prompted, select S for Specify Additional Device. 8. When prompted, insert the floppy disk that you created in step 2, and press Enter. 9. - If your system has Intel 7 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller, select Intel(R) 7 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller, and press Enter. - If your system has Intel 5 Series 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller, select Intel(R) 5 Series 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller, and press Enter. - If you selected RAID mode, select Intel(R) ICH8M-E/ICH9M-E/5 Series SATA RAID Controller, and press Enter. - If your system has Intel Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller, select Intel(R) Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller, and press Enter. 10. To continue the installation, press Enter again. Leave the floppy disk in the drive until the next reboot; the software may need to be copied from the floppy disk again when the files are copied during setup. 11. Follow the instruction to complete the Operating System installation. If you do not have a floppy disk drive, you can install Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver by the following alternative procedure (applicable to other SATA settings except RAID): NOTE: If you select AHCI for Serial ATA (SATA) in the BIOS Setup Utility before installing Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver, your computer will not respond; it will only display a blue screen. 1. Power off the computer. 2. Power on the computer. 3. Press the F1 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility when the "ThinkPad" logo is seen on the screen. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Select Config. 5. Select Serial ATA (SATA). 6. Select Compatibility. 7. Press the F10 key to save the new setup, and then select Yes. 8. Restart the computer. 9. Install Windows XP and Service Pack 2. 10. Download Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver from the Web site and extract the driver to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IRST. 11. Go to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IRST\PREPARE, and double-click/double-tap install.cmd. 12. Power off and on the computer. 13. Press the F1 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility when the "ThinkPad" logo is seen on the screen. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 14. Select Config. 15. Select Serial ATA (SATA). 16. Select AHCI. 17. Press the F10 key to save the new setup, and then select Yes. The computer will reboot and Windows XP will start. 18. The Welcome to the Found New Hardware Wizard appears. Select No, not this time, and then select Next. 19. Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced), and then select Next. 20. Select Search for the best driver in these locations. Then select Include this location in the search:, specify the path, C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IRST, and select Next. The Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard appears. 21. Select Finish. 22. When the System Settings Change window appears, Select Yes. The computer restarts. [Windows XP] UPDATE INSTALL 1. Start Windows XP. 2. Select Start and Control Panel. 3. Select Performance and Maintenance and System. 4. Select Hardware tab. 5. Select Device Manager button. 6. Select the + mark to expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers or Storage controllers category. 7. Right-click either of the following devices and then and select Properties; Intel(R) 7 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller Intel(R) 5 Series 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller Intel(R) Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller 8. Select Driver tab. 9. Select Update Driver button. 10. Select No, not this time and select Next. 11. Select Install from a list or specific location. 12. Select Next button. 13. Select Search for the best driver in these locations and Include this location in the search. 14. Select Browse button. 15. Locate the driver folder and select OK button. 16. Select Next button. The driver installation starts. 17. Select Finish button when the installation completes. 18.
